Ellerslie House –
In 1700 Ellerslie was a traditional farmhouse, known as Gills Green cottage. It was not until 1841, following the construction of a military road near the property, that an opportunity to build a house was seen by the French honorary Theodore Moilliet Esquire. At great personal expense he constructed the house on the current site along the lines it stands today. The house was completed around 1850 and the gardens and grounds took a further 20 years to finish.
After the Frenchman’s death, Admiral and Lady Tyrwhitt bought the house. It has thereafter had a succession of owners who have each added their own personal touch. The Haynes family purchased the house in 2010 and it is now inhabited by Alasdair and Jane, Alexander and George, two cats, one dog and four alpacas.
Sadly the great storm of 1987 took its toll on the estate and many of the mature trees were destroyed. The grounds have undergone significant replanting and although it may take many years before the splendour of the Moilliet dream is reborn it is still a magnificent home.
